Each educational program spotlights various Florida species, with information about their natural history, habitat and value to the environment.

Programs listed below consist of a 45-minute presentation, educational handouts and an animal encounter with non-releasable live animals held under a special educational permit.  Times and content have some flexibility and may be tailored to to fit your groups needs.

Presentations may be made to school, home school groups, scout and civic groups, as well as to the general public at environmental events such as Earth Day celebrations and birding or wildlife festivals. The following sections describe the programs that are currently being offered.

Our Wildlife Legacy (O.W.L) Program

Our Wildlife Legacy (O.W.L) is a program to teach children and adults about the importance of preserving our native wildlife and their environment for future generations.

GOPHER TORTOISES:
Burrowing Buddies Program

Imagine you ran a hotel where 360 people are always passing through when it is cool outside, when a natural disaster occurs, or when they just need a place to live. Seem like a lot of work?  Well, for a gopher tortoise, with all the species that share his burrow, this is part of his every day existence. Learn why gopher tortoises are a keystone species and why many species of Florida wildlife depend on these burrowing buddies for their homes.

All About Owls Program

Like to know WHOOO can locate their prey in total darkness by just listening for the rustling of the leaves? WHOOO can see as well at night as in the day? WHOOO can grab their prey and fly into the night without ever making a sound? Owls, that’s WHOOO! This program will give you the WHOOO, what, where, and why, about these nocturnal birds of prey right in your backyard.  Learn about the life and trials of the owls in our modern world and ways we can help keep these top predators around.

Wildlife Wisdom Program

This program is designed especially for our senior Floridians.  Its dual purpose is to educate and provide an up-close view to the beauty of the wild residents that share our communities.  We will bring 3-4 of our educational ambassadors to your facility.  Our ambassador birds range from several owls, hawks and falcons.  And for a hands-on experience, have Lt. Dan, a gopher tortoise, Carolina, a box turtle, and Copper a very friendly red rat snake.  Our reptile ambassadors can provide a tactile opportunity, and show how truly wonderful our ground dwellers are.

Available Education Program Add-On Packages

Wildlife Suitcase Add-on

Thanks to the generosity of the Brevard Zoo, we have a fantastic environmental teaching suitcase. It is available at no charge (with a refundable deposit) for use by local schools. An instructional DVD will help teachers and students use this resource. The suitcase contains puppets, books, games and other materials relating to Florida’s wildlife. Suitable for grades K-6.

Education Program Pricing Information

During challenging financial times, non-profit organizations are especially hard hit. In less stressful times, our very modest budget is carefully planned to provide maximum care to our patients, as well as maintenance of our facility. This is done almost exclusively through public donations.  Therefore, we regrettably cannot provide educational programs or event services without a monetary donation of $100.00 to $200.00, which is determined by the length of program, number of animals, and distance traveled.  We hope that you will consider supporting our organization by scheduling an educational program for your next event. Please contact the Florida Wildlife Hospital Program Coordinators, Bert Alm and Mary Bowman at mary@floridawildlifehospital.org or call us at (321) 254-8843.
